Gerald was a highly eligible young man with an attractive and outgoing personality. He had many girlfriends, all of them very pretty, and as he became of marriageable age, we were just as keen to see him settle down with a suitable young lady as we had been eager for Maxine to do the same. Like most parents, we wanted our son to experience the joy of having a family of his own, and although it was, of course, a source of great sadness to us that Maxine’s marriage did not seem to be turning out as happily as we would have hoped, we took some comfort that Gerald appeared careful not to make the same mistakes as her.

It was one day in 1990 that Brigitta and I were at a party at the house of mutual friends. We had helped ourselves to some food from the buffet and were sitting on the stairs, with our plates balancing on our knees, when another couple came to join us. We knew who they were, as we were members of the same social circle, but had never really chatted before. Their names were Harry and Carol Djanogly. We could not know at the time what an influence that meeting would have on our lives.

Harry was, and is, an extremely wealthy man, having made his fortune in the textile industry. We were making polite conversation when he made an observation. ‘You have a lovely son,’ he said, ‘and we have a lovely daughter. Wouldn’t it be nice if they got together?’ We thought very little of it at the time – as far as we were concerned, we did have a very lovely son – but so far as we knew neither Harry nor Carol had ever met Gerald at that point.

Later that year we were at our villa in the South of France. Gerald was with us. It was a beautiful sunny day when the phone rang. Brigitta answered. It was Carol Djanogly, whom we liked very much.

‘We’re in Antibes!’ she said.

‘How lovely,’ Brigitta replied, as hospitable as always. ‘You must come over, bring your swimsuits.’

‘I have my daughters with me,’ Carol said.

They were twin sisters, Simone and Joanne.

‘Bring them!’ Brigitta said. She knew that Joanne Djanogly was seriously involved with a very nice young man, whom she would later marry. Simone, however, was quite eligible, as the Djanoglys had already made clear to us.

So it was that Gerald and Simone met. A relationship blossomed, and no parents could have been happier as it became clear that Gerald had found his love. Simone was beautiful and kind and she came from a well-respected Jewish family. We were delighted when, a few short months later, they were married.
